EU at the Crossroads!From theTrumpet.com
January 26, 2009

What will be the outcome of Europe’s year of crisis? What impact will it have on the U.S. and Britain, themselves caught in the grip of their greatest crises since the Great Depression?

Ron Fraser The European Union is caught in the eye of the perfect storm.

Following almost six decades of patient and careful crafting of the vision to create a united European political power, all of a sudden the grand united European dream threatens to become a nightmare.

Economically, politically, ideologically and socially, the European Union—presently incorporating 27 nations extending from the United Kingdom to Ukraine’s western border, from Sweden to the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Cyprus—has moved into a state of general crisis. This is all happening within a year when a number of important events are scheduled to take place that will have great impact on the future of the EU and its American ally across the Atlantic.

The injection of crisis into each of these major events will powerfully influence their outcome and serve to shape a far different union of European states than we see extant today. Yet what emerges from Europe’s year of crisis will be very reminiscent of another grand vision of Europe that almost succeeded in directing the course of the world on a very different path to that which it has experienced over the past 60 years.

The post-crisis EU is destined to have powerful effect on relations between Europe, the United States and Britain.

Four events that will shape that post-crisis Europe are worthy of close watching as the year progresses: the EU constitution, the EU parliamentary elections, the nato summit and the German elections.

The EU Constitution

The European Constitution, renamed the reform treaty, or the Lisbon Treaty, evolved from an early and fairly simple arrangement between six European nations—France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands—designed to create a common market for coal and steel as established by the Treaty of Paris in 1951. This became known as the European Coal and Steel Community (ecsc).

The founding fathers of the European vision in its latter-20th-century form, Robert Schuman and Jean Monnet, were unsuccessful in their original attempt to impose a constitution on the ecsc member nations within the early postwar years. Those who followed in their footsteps elected instead to achieve their aim by a process of evolution via a succession of treaties enacted over time.

These successive treaties have evolved from that early foundational ecsc treaty into a document that, if finally actioned, will create an imperial power out of that which is presently the single greatest trading bloc in the world, a European power with the potential to replace the United States in the developing geopolitical vacuum that is resulting from America’s ongoing decline.

But a major hiccup has interrupted the timely actioning of the final treaty that was to put the capstone on European integration, the Lisbon Treaty. Due to have been implemented on Jan. 1, 2009, the treaty is stalled by lack of agreement to its final enactment by four nations—Ireland, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany!

EUobserver reported last Wednesday that Germany’s constitutional court is preparing to hear a case brought by Peter Gauweiler, member of Bavaria’s Christian Social Union (the party previously headed by Edmund Stoiber), who is claiming that the reform treaty not only infringes the rights of German citizens by allowing the European Court of Justice to supersede Germany’s court system, but also that the treaty allows for the German parliament, the Bundestag, to be trumped by the European Parliament.

The matters Herr Gauweiler has raised in relation to the impact of the Lisbon Treaty on Germany’s national sovereignty are very much akin to concerns over which British Euroskeptics have been vocal for years. Yet British Euroskeptics have received scant support from successive British governments for their cause. In fact, what concerns an increasing number of anti-treaty activists in Britain is the very real prospect of the mother of all parliaments, the British Parliament, becoming defunct by May 2010, should the European Constitution/reform treaty be enacted.

What is fascinating to observe in this case is that the imperialist EU vision, a German idea from its beginning, is now stalled awaiting the judgment of a German court charged with assessing its very legality within Germany itself!

This hindrance to the Lisbon Treaty process is contributing to a rising fear of the future fracturing of European unity, serving to exacerbate the feeling of crisis within the Union.

The EU Parliamentary Elections

The biggest transnational election in history will be held between June 4 and 7 across the EU’s 27 member nations. A total of 736 members of the European Parliament—the only directly-elected body of the largely non-democratic European Union—will in that process be elected by proportional representation.

If local elections held in each member country over the past year are representative of a trend, then we should see a more right-wing element dominating the European Parliament following the June election. What may swing the vote even more strongly toward the Catholic conservatives is the current mood that is beginning to translate itself into aggressive action on the streets within Europe’s cities as the global recession bites.

Speaking to protesters at a meeting in Iceland recently, British economist Robert Wade predicted that the riots in Greece and more recently in Iceland, Lithuania and Bulgaria, were an early warning signal that civil unrest is about to spread throughout Europe in reaction to governments’ decisions taken in the wake of the global financial and economic crunch.

“It will be caused by the rise of general awareness throughout Europe, America and Asia that hundreds and millions of people in rich and poor countries are experiencing rapidly falling consumption standards; that the crisis is getting worse, not better, and that it has escaped the control of public authorities, national and international,” he said (Times, January 22).

In the same article, the Times commented, “Across Europe, protesters demand a change of government. Politicians in wealthier countries can try to prop up banks and industries, but it does not work in heavily indebted nations with bloated and exposed financial sectors” (emphasis mine throughout).

Voters within the EU will be given their only opportunity to vote for a change in their national representation within the European Parliament in June. The economic situation by then will only be worse. The lead-up to those elections may well see scenes akin to those that recall the riots of 1968.

The scene could get particularly ugly in countries that have a large migrant content in their employable populations. The Times notes that “In the EU, migration was always a way out of a tight domestic labor market. No more: The sheer magnitude of the recession means there is no easy escape. There are reports of anti-immigrant trouble brewing in Spain” (ibid.).

Watch for a right-wing swing that could very well impact the outcome of the EU parliamentary elections this June.

The NATO Summit

Since the Cold War ended in the early ’90s, the future of nato has been up for grabs. The question of the future of an entity that has outlived its reason for being may come to a head at nato’s 60th anniversary summit this spring. The anniversary summit is slated to take place in the neighboring cities of Strasbourg, France, and Kehl, Germany, during April/May this year.

Germany has given clear warning that it wants to see the nature of nato’s mission changed and has made it known that it wants greater involvement in the command structure in nato operations, in particular within Afghanistan.

nato chief Gen. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has promised to come up with a new manifesto justifying nato’s existence, to be revealed at the anniversary summit. With a renewed U.S. isolationism emanating from the Obama/Clinton partnership in foreign policy being clearly on the cards, watch for the EU (read Germany) to exert heavy influence on the outcome of considerations being given to nato’s future at this crucial anniversary summit.

Already, plans are far advanced by radical leftists seeking to organize street protests in Strasbourg and Kehl during the nato summit. Such protests will ensure a high turnout by the baying liberal press to capture negative footage that will be designed to turn the minds of the masses in the Anglo-Saxon nations toward lessening involvement in what will be touted as a security alliance that has outlived its usefulness.

The EU waits in the wings, the Franco/German alliance keen to accept more responsibility for European and Middle Eastern defense, but wanting to appear reluctant to accept such responsibility without considerable concessions from the U.S. and Britain.

In the meantime, the action is already in play that will soon cement a new alliance—an East-West alliance between Germany and Russia—that will lay the groundwork of securing the new EU/imperial Russia border in Ukraine. Such an alliance will allow a united European power to get on with its march south and on to the Middle East to secure the much-needed resources to power the building of its own global empire, in particular Middle Eastern oil.

The German Elections

The German economy and foreign policy are key elements to be addressed by all parties involved in the German elections that will take place in September. The prime contenders for the chancellorship are the present incumbents in the chief offices of government in Germany: Chancellor Angela Merkel and Vice Chancellor/Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Though the chancellor was blessed with a dream run in the foreign-policy arena until September last year, her record on addressing Germany’s economic issues, in particular since the onset of the economic and financial crunch since then, has been quite shaky. This is proving to be her political Achilles heel and presents a window of opportunity for her vice chancellor to muscle in on Merkel’s foreign-policy record.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier was instrumental in massaging into effect the agreements reached between Germany and Russia over Georgia and most recently Ukraine. He has maintained a high profile in Middle East affairs and in Germany’s relations with China and Africa. Most recently, he has been the leading voice touting for a global leadership role for Germany hard on the heels of U.S. President Obama’s election.

German news source Deutsche Welle, citing a piece from Sunday’s edition of the Welt am Sonntag, reported that “a proposal drafted by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier could form the basis of future European Union policy on the Middle East. The report … quotes diplomatic sources in Berlin who say that the document has already been endorsed by France, Britain, Italy and Spain. The aim of the initiative is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Steinmeier’s plan also covers humanitarian aid and halting weapons smuggling in the Gaza Strip. The proposal is to be discussed during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday.”

Here is a clear instance of Steinmeier pushing Germany and its proxy, the EU, to the forefront in the Middle East peace process.

This report comes hard on the heels of the recent statements made by Steinmeier that show a very clear agenda to push Germany even further to the fore in international relations—globally.

German-Foreign-Policy.com reports that “The assumption of office of the new U.S. President Barack Obama … is unanimously grasped in Berlin as a chance to strengthen the global power of Germany” (January 20, our translation).

Taking the lead in this push for the strengthening of German power in the wake of the election of the greenhorn president is none other than Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

In an open letter to America’s new president, Steinmeier declares that “‘No country of the world, including the usa, can alone solve the present problems’ … while demanding a stronger roll for Germany in the framework of Western hegemonic politics: ‘Together we can shape the world in the 21st century. America must abandon the exclusive dominant perch and act as country among countries,’ it is being said in the backrooms of the [German] Foreign Office. At the same time, German politicians anoint the EU as ‘the world power in the making …. Only if it would sit at eye level at the table, would it [usa] become ready to accept worldwide rules,’ judges Steinmeier. To emphasize who coins the ‘rules,’ let there be no doubt: ‘The EU and usa should go “shoulder to shoulder” to shape the world in the 21st century’” (ibid.).

Thus Germany’s vice chancellor seeks to elevate a German-led EU to the same position of power at the negotiating table as the United States, as a forerunner to displacing America as the leading global power “in the making.”

Eight months in advance of Germany’s federal elections, Frank-Walter Steinmeier is making his play for the chancellorship and is presently licking Chancellor Merkel hands down in the process.

Given the nation’s present state of financial and economic crisis, predicted to only worsen in the ensuing months, the German electorate will revert to type and swing progressively to the right.

Will Steinmeier have what it takes to seize Merkel’s crown?

On present indications, he may well trump Angela Merkel at her strongest suit, foreign policy, and lead Germany into an era of dominance as a global power, even as the U.S. accelerates its drawdown of forces in Europe and across the world, under an increasingly isolationist Obama/Clinton foreign policy.

From Crisis to Climax

It is a fact, long embedded in history, that the German people will, in times of crisis, seek a messianic deliverer; a leader who inspires them to seize extra living space (lebensraum) at great expense to other nations. This has been the case from the time of the Assyrian Empire, through to Charlemagne’s Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, on to Kaiser Wilhelm’s and Adolf Dolfi’s attempts at seizing world power during the 20th century.

To deny that today’s Germany—the greatest export nation in the world, with a restored German High Command (albeit under a different name), progressively deploying German military forces to an increasing number of fronts around the world—will not, under circumstances akin to those of 1914 and 1939, resort to the same behavior as is its historical tradition in times of great crisis, is simply to deny that nation’s history, let alone reveal gross ignorance of the inerrant prophecies of the Bible for these times.

The Nazis who went underground, many escaping to the New World countries via the Vatican-sponsored ratlines, have largely died out. But they have seen to it that their spirit lives on in another generation, a generation that has taken that Liebling vision of world domination, cloaked it in the language of democracy, and stimulated the building of the largest single imperial entity extant on Earth today: the European Union.

The fact that there be few who see this, yet, does not deny its reality.

Those who do see it are among the most incisive and articulate of analysts on the world scene today. They are largely rejected by a massively blind, leftist press and mass media. The result is whole populations duped by their media masters into yielding their underused minds to a media-driven dream peppered with porn, salacious drivel on the lives of “celebrities,” and generally dumbed-down “entertainment.”

Add to this the “music” fed to the masses filled with vacuous lyrics from drug-soaked minds, all driven by the thumping, mind-numbing beat of gross monotony, and you have whole populations being simply primed for enslavement—a mental enslavement that blinds them to the dangers ahead as they plunge down the road to national bankruptcy and the inevitable takeover of their national assets by their foreign creditors.

It’s not a pretty picture.

Yet, sadly, we have to say, we told you so.

For over 75 years, a voice has been crying out in the wilderness seeking to warn the Anglo-Saxons and their associated brother nations of the storm to come. A storm identified by the very words of your Maker as a Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21), a time of world trouble vastly exceeding the two great world wars that convulsed this globe last century.

We will not cease to sound that warning while Almighty God continues to give us the power to fulfill that commission.

If you are one who can see the reality of the prophesied great time of world trouble that is coming upon us, stimulated by the rising crisis in Europe, then you will be held accountable by Almighty God to do something about it!

Request your own copy of our book The Incredible Human Potential.

Read it.

Study it. Study it prayerfully. And as its breathtaking vision unfolds in your mind, resolve to become part of this vitally important work of warning the world of impending global catastrophe, that many, like you, might yet grasp the vision of the better world to come that is guaranteed by your Creator to follow the great holocaust ahead.
