Liberals ditch candidate for 9/11 remark!
Lesley Hughes, right, listens to Liberal Leader Stephane Dion during a visit to the Asper Jewish Community Centre in Winnipeg, Sept. 24. Hughes was fired as the Liberal candidate for Kildonan-St. Paul on Sept. 26 for comments she made several years ago about the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Jewish community leaders are praising Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion's decision to dump a candidate who wrote about allegations that Israeli businesses had advance knowledge of the 9/11 attacks.
Dion yesterday asked that Lesley Hughes, the party's flag-bearer in Kildonan-St. Paul, step aside because of views expressed in 2003.
"The leader had to step in. He did the right thing," said Bernie Farber, chief executive officer of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
Farber said it was "obscene" that any politician would suggest the Jewish community knew of the pending attacks and did nothing to warn authorities. "There is nothing more hurtful," he said in an interview yesterday.
Hughes wrote in a March 2003 edition of a newsletter published by a committee of the Winnipeg Presbytery of the United Church of Canada that U.S., German, Russian and Israeli intelligence officials knew about the attacks in advance.
He said a statement issued by Hughes' on Thursday was itself "inappropriate and nonsensical."
In her statement, Hughes said: "I find any interpretation of my journalism as anti-Semitic personally offensive and I heartily apologize for that perception."
Dion initially tried to sidestep questions about Hughes' status during a stop in Toronto yesterday morning, telling reporters the party and the candidate were in discussions with the Jewish congress. But within hours, Dion announced that he was asking Hughes to step aside.
"The Liberal party's commitment to tolerance and multiculturalism is paramount. I have reviewed the past comments of Lesley Hughes and it is clear they do not meet this standard," he said in the statement.
In Winnipeg, Hughes told the CBC that Dion's decision to fire her was "the theatre of the absurd."
Having dumped his own candidate, Dion challenged Prime Minister Stephen Harper to take action on Conservative incumbent Lee Richardson, who suggested immigrants are prone to commit crime.
"Is that for Mr. Harper something acceptable? It's a matter of leadership," Dion said.
